Business rules, events and processes

My friend Paul Haley (now founder and president of Automata, Inc.) had an interesting post on event processing last week - CEP crossing the chasm into BPM by way of BRMS. Paul made a number of great points including that...

I too dislike the term BRMS. It deemphasizes the broader need to manage knowledge assets. Still, we need a better, constructive term. Policy management system doesn't do it for me. Knowledge management was too passive and people don't think about what CEP, BPM, BRMS use as knowledge. This is a hurdle that will be crossed, increasing focus on semantics and ontology (e.g., from the web) will help, but it will take time.

Looking forward to the post!!

Flexibility by selection or adaption

Most process systems have flexibility by selection, but few have flexibility by adaption. With the need for agile businesses we need a new breed of process systems that are dynamic where tasks and subprocesses can be changed on the fly based on demand and needs. Rules and CEP will play an important role here. This will increasingly be the centre of our Drools related process research.

BRMS is dead...

I'm going to do a blog in the next day or so which will declare the BRMS as dead, it's a term that is far to rule centric and we need to start moving people away from a rule or process centric view of their business. We are renaming our BRMS to Guvnor, after Lenny "The Guv'nor" Mclean and obviously a play on governance. While I'm not a huge fan of this enterprisey term it is one most people understand and allow us to have a system that can allow rules, processes and cep to be accepted more equally. And the guvnor spin on it atleats keeps it more light hearted and tongue in cheque for us. Lenny was britains hardest man and champion bare knuckle fighter :)

It'll be a light blog just showing off a few of the screenshots for the new work.
